Tesco Staff Not To Be Trusted?

The Mirror reports: "TESCO is carrying out random searches on its staff in a clampdown on stealing. The supermarket giant, which makes £1billion [sic - it's actually £2billion+] profit a year, says the checks are necessary - but workers claim the searches are degrading. One said: "For loyal members of staff, they are utterly humiliating." The workers at Tesco Extra hypermarkets all have to press a green button as they leave work... and that decides who is searched.

A manager said: "It is randomly done and we do not discriminate [ie -we do not trust any of our staff?]." Shopworkers' union Usdaw said: "If staff wish, we will take it up with the management." The Centre for Retail Research claims 40 per cent of missing stock in stores, worth £8million a year, is stolen by staff."

Tesco-Complaint would like to put those figures from the CRR into context: Tesco made in excess of £2billion profit last year thanks to the hard work of it's staff. If £8million of UK retail stock is stolen by UK retail staff in the sector then the value stolen in Tesco by staff must be in the thousands or hundred thousands. Considering Tesco's £2billion profit this tiny amount of theft by probably a miniscule proportion of staff is not enough to demoralise all Tesco staff on a daily basis in this machine-like way. These people earn your company a huge fortune or should only Sir Terry Leahy get credit for Tesco's profit? Someone at Tesco PLC needs to think seriously about responsible corporate governance and about it's promise:

"We constantly review how we are performing and look for better ways of working to ensure a safe and enjoyable shopping and working environment for our people and our customers."

As far as I am aware, most supermarkets carry out staff searches. Personally I think that the system Tesco is employing (the green button thing) is a fair one. At least then nobody feels like they are being singled out all of the time.

I don't see what is so degrading about a random search. If the staff find it so degrading and humiliating then they shouldn't have signed the employment contract or at the very least get the union to take it up with Tesco.

To whom ever wrote this pathetic article. Yes Tesco made X amount of profit last year profit that is british and reinvested in britain unlike Asda that is owned by the US .
Anyway like most employers Tesco has tight security especially nowadays with extra stores having such large amounts of high value stock.
For staff to be working in cohoots with thiefs is not uncommon, this affects unknown loss or the official term Shrink, now if every Tesco saved 10K over a year on theft that would become a substantial amount over all groups and would be a good plus when on stocktake and eventually affect the shares in a positive away, so what im saying is buy Tesco shares because you are investing in a british company.

Just think every pound you spend in Asda gets converted into Dolars and sent back to the good ol USA

attack me if you please because im proud of Tesco as its the last British company thats got the Balls to diversify into other areas of the market and continues to grow.

Ok some people will give shit service and to that I am truly sorry. I beleive in treating every customer with respect be it an upper class pounce or a shell suit clad scouser.

Nothing humiliating about it if you have nothing to hide.

Disgusted with Tesco's and what goes on in a store especially when a store closes down by the Head Office -- You don't have to tell me what goes on in a store when a store closes down -- It is absolutely AWFUL when a store closes down -- The attitude of the staff and workers, etc is AWFUL.This happened almost 9 years ago where I worked when a store closed down. Not only is it heartbreaking when a store closes down but what a shock to learn what a store manager done to me after the store closed down -- Biggest shock of my life to learn what he had done.I have been hurt and destroyed because of it and humiliated because of it.The shock of it has left me very very hurt and angry and neither will I get over it.I have suffered and suffered because of it.This particular store manager has caused me a lot of grief and distress since the store closed down in 2002.I have been loyal and devoted in my job.EVERY LITTLE HELPS -- I don't think so TESCO'S.

I do not work for Tesco, but was on one of their sites testing some equipment in a back office and when going out to collect some eqpt from my car was stopped by the green push button exit and asked to go to a room to empty my pockets due to random search policy.I said this doesn't seem right to me as I wasn't an employee and had neither seen ,signed or was aware or agreed to any search.I emtied my pockets under protest and shown I had nothing but personal belongings and the security staff said it affected staff and visitors.I still do not think this process of a random search on a visitor to site is correct. Can anyone confirm?

To Anonymous @ 7:50 PM == Yes, Tesco's staff or security do have a right to search you as you are on their property even though you do not work for Tesco's but you will have signed to enter and signed on leaving as it is company's policy although it may seem unfair to you that you have been subject to a search whilst on their site but just think on as a security measure...

Anonymous said...

Well as a security measure they can do whatever THEY want can they, its all one way traffic is it?
What about the the embarrassment to me,my human rights stand for nothing or data protection of personal documents I was carrying whilst a visitor in the store. What checks or guarantee is there for the visitor that the staff doing the search are trustworthy to view/examine my personal possessions.

To Anonymous 12.57AM December 01, 2012 -- Yes, you are right you cannot trust anyone and especially security guards. Security guards do lie (like hell). I know myself from my experience when I was a cleaner/janitor at a Tesco store some years ago. I would like to name and shame security guards as they are not honest in their dealings. Security guards even back-stab you. Believe me, you can't trust Tesco staff or their security guards in any way.
