Shock for mum as she spots Tesco rat in aisle

This Is Hampshire report that an Andover mum was left shocked and disgusted when she saw a rat running around Andover's Tesco superstore. Hayley Kirby, from Pilgrims Way, was shopping at the River Way store with her 12-year-old son Jordan when she saw the rat running under the bread aisle.

"I was just so shocked when I saw it come running out from under the bread.

"It was huge, definitely bigger than average, and it had obviously been eating in the store.

"Rats are vermin. They shouldn't be anywhere near Tesco.

"They are definitely the last thing you expect to see when shopping in a food store," she added.

While she was waiting at the tills she told Jordan to look in the aisle to see if he could see anything.

"He told me members of staff were all on their knees looking under the aisles but whenever customers appro-ached they got up acting as though they weren't doing anything," she said.

Hayley later contacted Tesco's head office only to be told they were aware of the problem.

"I was told they have pest control coming in three times a week so they obviously know what's going on."

Hayley, who has shopped at Tesco for as long as she can remember, will now only shop at the superstore because its convenient..

"It's only down the road and I admit I'll be wary whenever I walk in there but I'll just remember not to buy any open ended food. Who knows which French stick the rats have been eating?"

A spokesman for Tesco said the store was aware of the problem but was adamant there was no risk to customers.

He added: "The store is based next to land used by Southern Water and rats have been an issue for the whole of the retail area. We are working as hard as we can to eradicate the problem by meshing and sealing up points of entry. It's a case of taking every possible step we can to make sure these horrible things don't gain access."

Well, at a rough guess, the one with the bite marks on it? Not really a complicated identification procedure is it?

are you sure the rat wasn't just one of the management "team"?

Anonymous said...

More likely a customer!

Anonymous said...

no a manager. thats why i said management team.

Anonymous said...

No I meant customer, thats why I said customer!

Anonymous said...

this would never happen in netto.

Anonymous said...

because netto has no customers?

Anonymous said...

"This would never happen in netto. "

Here we go!

"Netto Foodstores Ltd has recalled Minimum Cereal Bars (Cranberry and Apple) 6 x 25g, following a single customer complaint of foreign body contamination, parts of a rodent found within the product."

http://www.food.gov.uk/enforcement/alerts/2007/mar/nettocereal

"Netto Ltd has issued a product recall of its 392g cans of Chilli Con Carne, due to contamination of one of the ingredients with the illegal dye Sudan I. "

http://www.foodstandards.gov.uk/news/newsarchive/2003/oct/sudannettonews071003

I thought that sort of stuff wasn't suppose to happen in Netto!

LOL

Anonymous said...

IT doesn't, that was later found out to be a Tesco employee, jealous of the continusing success of Netto, who planted the foreign object in the cereal bars!

Anonymous said...

now that is lying! no tesco employee, or sainsburys, or morrisons, or asda, or even lidl would set foot in netto!

Anonymous said...

need to find a netto first....

There that should help you find one of the many Netto UK stores.

Much more useful than a few poxy clubcard points wouldn't you all agree?

Anonymous said...

lol saving 50p a week (if your lucky)on shopping is freeing up finances considerably!

Anonymous said...

The person in question can actually now afford two or three trips abroad every year, AND run a car. If you can do that off a 50 pence saving I would like to know how!!

Anonymous said...

Rubbish, those places are no cheaper than Asda, which only seems to be 1% or 2% different from Tesco anyway.

Hi Hayley,
Don't worry about the rat, there are a lot of those top brass in paying visits to tesco stores all the time,
The rat was probably looking at ways to find more selling space or ways to (of coarse) make even more profits to get a promotion;-)
By the way you are pretty neat, are you single?;-)

Anonymous said...

Yes I agree,
A nice girl like you shouldn't be shopping in a big rat store;-)
Support local shops or lose us forever! Think about it very seriously!

Anonymous said...

Hmmm,
People seem to think that tesco is the squeeky clean almighty for the discerning mother that wants everything never touched by human hands in glitzy polly packing for their siddlings, they think they know it all, far from the truth,I wouldn't put any sort of thing from a supermarket in my mouth,I bet the immigrant packer of the product didn't even wash his/her hands after going to the toilet!?should they even care? Now before you go off spouting about racism then for one, that is not the case and secondly who even cares in the hush hush environment we live in about racial equality, they are in OUR country by our ways of life, remember this is OUR land!
Anyway back to the rats, the store sells food, fact, anyhere you are from home there is actually a rat 20 feet in your vicinity or vermin, the back doors of tesco or any supermarkets are laden with these pests like villiage of the damned,Supermarkets ARE NOT CLEAN, they are made to look clean but in reality it's a different story, My only advice to haley or anyone, give the supermarkets a miss, try the local greengroccer, try the local butcher as you WILL NOT believe what you have been missing out on for so long! trust me! you won't return to a supermarket!I hear the excuse about having no time, what a load of crap,it comes down to laziness the imagination that supermarkets are cheaper, when will you people ever learn? uk pork?country of origin in small print in germany from morrisons! get real, this is a serious worry, go local and get real, wake up!want your young ones to have a future career?then stop supporting the bloody supermarkets, trust me it maybe seem ok just now but our future is going to be very bleak, where are a lot of jobs going to go?india?cheap labour?caountry of mass depression! I know it's coming, take a simple example, german pork made to believe it's british, british farmer has been put out of business, the vet suffers, the agro engineer suffers, the tractor supplier suffers and because the british farmer makes nothing he goes out of business, the council don't get their taxes and suffer so your taxes go up,morrisons or any supermarkets celebrate their mass profits to some immigrant in germany prepparing your water pummped msg meat.and thats just a small example, think about it,i would say the future is very scary unless we all act now and fast.
Can you think of any local abatoir in your area? when was the last time you knew a local farmer or seen a cow?know any veg growers? Please wake up!
Just think about it and while your at it think about when it's going to affect your job!I,m allright jack just now but it will come.

I worked in a store for Tesco not far from Andover and yes there was rats. I worked on Dot com and there was always an ongoing problem in the warehouse and the dot com area with rats running around. Rat traps were always left with poison inside, there was at least three traps inside the Dot com area over Christmas 2006. I am not surprised these stores have a rat problem with the way there waste is stored. The warehouse I worked had a waste area in the corner of the warehouse, within yards of cartons of mild and cages of other food waiting to be put on the shelves. The waste can be anything to ripped packets to food simply thats gone out of date. The waste should be cleared daily, but because of lack of staff some times it would be lucky to be cleared weekly, so you can imagine the smell when items such as cartons of milk went bad. Next to the Dot com area was a waste dispoal bin which was emptied every week, but on some occasions it wouldnt get emptied for weeks and the smell would be to much to handle, imagine gone of meat etc yes disgusting and on alot of occasions staff would be renching and often made you physically sick. But this is all hushed up and kept quiet because this is "Tesco" the company that cares about its customers and staff, they care about nothing but making money..........

ive been working at tescos for the past 13years.I now work on non food department and i dislike my manager so much i think i am being victimnised by her. She never takes on board what i have to say and she thinks she knows best when shes only been working for tescos for a few months. I now go to work not looking forward to my shifts as she makes my nights unbearable and very stressful. can anyone write to me to tell me what to do in this situation. many thanks anomonous.

Have you tried to speak to your manager? That is the best place to start, just in case the problems you are having stem from some sort of misunderstanding.
If that doesn't help then the next step should be to talk to an USDAW rep in your store. They should be able to support you through the process of submitting a grievance against your manager.
Hope that this is of some help.
