Tesco's Bad Customer Service Lottery!
I am writing to complain about a member of staff in your Tesco extra store in Galashiels. Whilst in the store today my 17 year old daughter was refused a lottery ticket because the woman who was serving did not believe that she was 17, even though both myself and her dad was present. This I understand is store policy and I would have been okay with this but the way that she spoke to me when I asked to buy one was disgraceful especially in front of other customers. She spoke down to me as if I was a child made out that I was a liar and she then refused to serve me a lottery ticket in case I gave it to my daughter.
I'm actually 45 years old and have been a customer of yours for many many years and I have never before been spoken to like that before. I spoke to one of the managers who actually apologised on her behalf which I think was also wrong, I should have received an apology from her. For someone who deals with the public on a daily basis her attitude needs to change or I am sure you will lose many more customers.

Nothing done wrong there at all, no ID, no sale.
And we can also prevent sales if we suspect that the older customer will pass it on to someone younger.
It just seems the op just can't take that "she's 17" isn't valid proof.
That's not being talked down to, it's fact! You'd think someone who supposidly works with the pubilc should know that!
There is nothing wron gwith what the cashier did. We have the right to refuse to serve anyone at any time, without really needing a reason. If the cashier was not satisfied your daughter was old enough, she's correct not to serve. If she also felt you would give her the ticket, again she's in the right.
As for forcing her to apologise to you - you must be having a laugh. I bet you didn't shout at her did you? You just calmly walked away and waited for the manager? Again, b*ll*cks. I don't believe that would be true.
Did you apologise to her? I really doubt it. Customers never ever do.
My local tesco express is terrible when it comes to things like this. I am 18 (nearly 19) and i have problems buying lottery tickets ALWAYs and ONLY at Tescos! - Once the guy would not process my lotto ticket, but he let me buy a pack of ANADIN!!

Because of you being either lazy or stupid? - You probably embarrassed both your daughter and the member of staff that had to refuse her!

As irritating as it might be, it's something that tesco are forced to do. Whist you don't have to be that age, if you look under 21 Tesco and other supermarkets are forced, by trading standards to ask you for id if you're buying anything age restricted (including petrol/diesel/LPG), even if you have an adult with you.
Trading standards regularly send underage people and people who they consider to look under 21 in to buy age restricted products to check that cashiers are checking for ID.
If the cashier doesn't, then trading standards now have the power to hand him/her an on-the-spot fine AND a criminal record. This is probably why you'll find that supermarket cashiers have suddenly become strict about it.
Cashiers are also entitled to refuse sale to someone accompanying the person they suspect of being underage. Unfortunately there are people who do buy items and pass them to the underage person who has just been refused and once they've payed it's almost impossible to stop them. So it's easier just to refuse sale to anybody with that underage person
this sort of thing happens all then time over age restricted sales, even if you was 156 years old it still had to be refused. nobody enjoys questioning peoples age or intentions but if a cashier gets it wrong the consequenses are huge and not worth it. be greatful you look young!!!!

I was in tesco today, and even though i'm 20, and was trying to clame £6 (from scratchcards) back, the old Bat behind the counter wouldnt give me the money, saying i needed id. Wow some of you are proper jobs worth it's only bloody tesco. Firstly there is age restrictions on any form of tablets, also a customer is only allowed 2 buy 2 boxes of them.
Secondly tesco make up their own policies I got refused a lottery ticket the other day because apparently you have to look over 18 which I have never heard that one in my life I'm 23.
Talking about customer service if some of you work in tesco with an attitude like that I'm surprised you haven't had the sack you're language is terrible !
I've just had a similar experience, so as I think Tesco's are terrible at customer service that I'll cancel my tesco home insurance, cancel my clubcard, never shop there again and recommend everyone I know to do likewise.
I went straight to Asda and bought the computer game I wanted, no troubles, very polite, no hitler look alikes trying to act as if they're important. Plus, guess what, it cost £6 less at Asda, I'll be going to Asda from now on, vote with your wallet, I am. Good bye Tescos, promise you now, I will never purchase another item from you for as long as I live.
May I suggest you all follow my lead and just stop giving them your hard earn't money, perhaps they'll learn to treat customers with a bit more respect.
