Tesco won't even give water to staff?
I worked part time at Tesco whilst I was at uni. the staff are lovely but the managers are awful. I’m not sure what it is that makes them think they are better than the general assistants, I was there finishing off my PhD yet was treated like I was educated to 11+ standard. The attitude towards the staff really put them on a downer, especially when they put them on a disciplinary for having days off sick, yes, that’s right, if your ill then you get in trouble. They also flaunt human rights, telling staff they are not allowed to have a bottle of water with them on the tills which is a direct violation of the ‘portable water’ that all staff are entitled to have. All in all they make a lot of money because that’s their motivation, they are not concerned about staff welfare and flaunt human rights and safety laws where possible. it’s a disgrace.

You should be allowed water to carry around. I am a student working at Tesco over the holidays and I get treated well and am allowed to drink/eat/have on my person anything I want really. I have been working with them over a few years though and they are more restrictive when you haven't built up a level of trust.
However it's a fact of working there that you will get the odd knob of a manager, but my advice is to deal with them directly but politely(especially on the drinks rule)and they will probably respect you for it- they can't sack you for it.
Most of the crap in Tesco comes from the very top however. This week our store lost its water supply- toilets would not flush and drinks and handwashing facilities were not available for several hours and the store became filthy. On health grounds the store should have been shut or hand sanitiser gels supplied, but the regional management influence kept us open through the filth with only the deli areas being closed.
So really you will feel like you are being treated poorly at some times, but remember its likely the management are being treated badly and they're badly paid too.

I am currently working at Tesco and have been for the last 11 years - I have been working here through six form college and uni and now I am waiting to finsh my share options in February so I can leave! However it doesn't matter how qualified you are unless your management you'll get treated like Anna Stapleton stated above! They treat you like your at school! Last weeks team five states unless you are pregnant or have an illness that states you need water while you work then you cant have water at all on the shop floor and even in the case of the ill or pregnant you have to have permision from you line manager! This is unbelievable as your never aloud to leave the shop floor so if your firsty you have to suffer until break time! I think it is about time Sir Terry got him self into the store and worked with GAs and see how the managers work - it might open his eyes slightly
I got a warning when my father tried to commit suicide and i needed 2 days off to sit by his bed and talk him out of trying to do it again.
due to one other previous absence when i had food poisoning my 'percentage' went above the 3% mark.. roll out the warnings..
tried to appeal my warning but cause someone apparently seen me out on the town they didn't budge.
the new managers are full of a power rush.. its down to the training.
i work as a checkout team leader and i can assure you in my store if anyone needs a drink or the toilet then they just close down their tills and go. i really enjoy my job all the staff including managers and senior team all gets on well with each other there is no "us and them" attitude everyone mucks in together
Right....The reason as to why you are not allowed water on the tills is because (believe it or not) you dont have to pay £150 an hour for a siemens engineer to come and fix the till when things get spilt...I am sure that its happened before.
I am a manager and I would never dream of treating my staff like shite..everyone is a individual and I respect that, and that is why I enjoy my job!!
As for sickness, Its important to remember that you are being disciplined for not forfilling your contracted hours with the company, and not for being ill. Everyone else has to do your work for you when you are not there and that isnt fair, and warnings should only be given after the attendance revie w policy is carried out in full! Sorry if I sound a bit jobsworth i dont mean to but it winds me up when people dont think of it from the other side!!
I work at Tesco's too and get treated like a piece of shit. Two days ago a sheet of metal fell on my leg and I was'nt allowd to go home. It hurt real bad. No sympathy at all. I had to return to work afterwards. You're just a number to them. Got treated better when I worked in a warehouse.

I can totally agree with you on this, i work with tesco in the Craigmarloch store in Cumbernauld (Scotland)and they are exactly the same. They have no regard for their staffs wellbeing or basic needs.
When off sick, even after producing a doctors line or hospital letter you are still given into bother for being off and your percentage is checked. If over 3% then you are given an attendance review and if you have been off before then you are given a warning. (a part- time worker only needs to be of twice in 6 months and there over 3%) This is absolutely disgraceful!!
They also have no clue how to speak to their staff, its an absolute disgrace the way the general assistants are treated by the managers, i mean come on, half the general assistants in there are university students with degrees behind them, yet they are being treated lke 2yr olds!! What the managers dont seem to realise is that, we have more brains than them.....or maybe they do know that and thats the problem?! So it leads me to the conclusion that its all about power trips!! "look at me, im wearing a polyester suit and you will do as i say", its a joke and so are the managers! I think Head office wants to take a good look at the 'managers' they have employed as 'supposed to be' role models!! Trained monkeys would do a better job!!
I worked for tesco for 13 years and i can't believe how over the years that tesco's treatment of staff has got so bad.It seems that years of service means nothing to them. I can't rememeber the last time i felt appreciated there and had a thank you off a team leader/manager. The attitude at the store i worked as well if you dont like it there is the door. I have left tesco and now work for sainsbury and i have lots of appreciation and lots of thanks, they could teach tesco a thing or to.
The USDAW REP in that store must be very weak(manager's toy boy).Am a union rep and i could organised for a walk out from the members on health and safety grounds and then report the matter to the local council for a complete closure till everything is sorted out.Advice them to resign and get other watchdogs

Get a grip! Having stumbled accross this poor excuse of a website, I can't believe what a bunch of whingeing muppets some of you are! Tesco has the most lenient absence policy of any major company and is very structured. If you are regularly off sick then you should do not deserve to work for a good company and should have disciplinary action takem against you. You let everyone else down, cause more work for others etc. I have worked for the company for many years in management all over the country and Tesco is a great company to work for, great share options, great benefits and it is down to those that I have a 2nd salary every year just from shares (the same share options that are available to ALL staff). Stop slagging Tesco off and start supporting a true BRITISH company, before some Arab Businessman starts to sniff around. wanting to buy them out. As for not being allowed water at the tills, you get a 15 minute break at least every 4 hours, you are sat on your backside for that time, hardly thirst-quenching is it??? GET A GRIP!

I have been working for Tesco for four years, part time, one day a week in a on the produce department. If I have 1 days illness I am automatically over the 3% limit for non-attendance. Earlier this year I had 1 day off as a consequence of being a victim of a serious violent crime and another day off due to a severe viral illness. For this I had a disciplinary, even though both instances of absence were accepted as being genuine by management. A couple of weeks ago I went to work while I was suffering with the flu (and I’m not talking about a cold; I had nausea, muscular aching, extreme exhaustion, dizziness, coughing sneezing and a running nose etc) and it was a real struggle to get through the shift. Working in a public enclosed place – I expect I probably passed the illness on to a high number of customers and colleagues. I let the management know that I was suffering from the flu and they put me on light duties (doing the reductions). If I went home that day I would have probably been given my penultimate warning, and if I was ill during the following 16 week period I probably would have been dismissed. The upper Tesco management who make up these rules and procedures do not seem to understand that sometimes people do become genuinely ill.
This kind of disciplinary encourages staff to attend when they are ill, with no regards for the possible transmission of a contagious illness to the public and other staff. Additionally, I fail to see what good a ‘warning’ does. Effectively, they are warning me not to become I’ll again – I’m sorry but how can they warn people not to be affected by something that they have absolutely no control over.
I would like to thank the Tesco upper-management for these ridiculous procedures, and to all the other Tesco staff out there, remember even if you have a contagious illness you must come into work - or you could be disciplined - and even if you are not fully fit to do your job effectively, just remember the Tesco motto …every little helps.
For the people who say we are all moany, sad, pathetic losers for writing on this website, its not about having a good old moan. Its about trying to make people understand that although tesco are a multi billon pound company and have a finger in every pie....they do not treat there staff properly. This website is a great idea because alot of the people that write on it are staff or were staff at one point. Personally i have argued and argued with the management in the store about my issues but they just are not interested in helping you- not even the personnel manager. If you write to head office you dont get a reply because they dont want to hear about it. So this is a way to get your point across and hopefully make head office staff sit upand take note of whats actually going on in their stores. I think alot of people are so frustrated by the way they have been messed about and fobbed off that they do just spill the beans on hear. Tesco need to realise that if they addressed issues properly,took the correct action and were true to their word, this website would not exist. They really have brought it on themselves. You reap what you sow and all that.

The managers arent trained appropriately and are in their jobs purely because they are robots who do not question tesco in anyway and do not use their brains to deal with employees.
Heres one example of bad management my boyfriends mum died while he was at work, his manager told him if he left he'd have to make up his hours. He quit on the spot.

When I started working for Tesco, I was bullied for months by the Team Leaders and Managers. When I say bullied, I mean I was shouted at and called "stupid" for not working fast enough or putting something out wrong.
Over time, the bullying ended and the management seemed to develop a respect for me. I saw the same treatment with all new staff. It was like a test.
When a new manager arrived, staff were again bullied by management. I was told by the team leader I befriended that "sh** rolls".
The final straw was when a customer pushed me on the shop floor and called me ******* idiot for knowing where something was. I told him to leave the store before I called security. The manager arrived and supported the customer and shouted at me in front of other customers for giving "bad customer service".
That was the end. I had a perfect record up to then, no absense and 5 years of service, ended just like that.
It's mainly the store managers and senior team that don't respect the general assistants but the normal managers are normally great. The team i'm in could never find a better manager, we're respected, all our holidays are approved no matter how hard she has to work to cover it all, she includes us all in the running of our department and makes sure we have everything we need to do our jobs well, we can have any drink we like or snacks or leave at any point for a toilet break. Some managers are amazing and these shouldnt be included with the others saying 'all managers are shit'

Hi, i was a manager in Tesco for eight years and i can tell you that if you have a twisted PM then you have no chance. Section managers have to discipline staff when they dont want to or they risk losing their own jobs. It does not help that the company is full of arse lickers and crawlers.All managers who read this will know what i mean unless they are one of the above.As for U S D A W MY ADVICE WOULD BE SAVE YOUR MONEY.
I've heard the same thing from section managers in my own store. They can be put under pressure from senior managers, and if a member of the senior team wants somebody gone, they will be gone.
That's only what I've been told by a small number of people though and may not apply everywhere.

I work in a certain department at Ipswich Copdock would like you all to know what goes on and what other staff put up with there.
Drivers have been sent out with defects on the vans many times including brake warning lights, missing side view/ blind spot mirrors. A few drivers were sent out in a van that had defective windscreen wipers which would not work if the indicators were used. The dotcom manager made the drivers go out to get the deliveries done. One of the dotcom team leaders delivers customers shopping early and then forges customer signatures on a daily basis to reach delivery targets on reach to make it look like he is doing a great job( he is an ex policeman). When the freezer and coolers have gone wrong on some of the vans, the frozen food has been sent out defrosted. The warehouse is so packed sometimes that the fire doors and exit doors are not accessable in the case of an emergency. I could go on but after my rant I think that you all will get the idea that we are bullied into doing things that are not acceptable for health and safety reasons, but are then threatened that we may get a disciplinary for not complying with management.
On the subject of water, I was earwigging on one of the shop staff in the canteen one day. He had not had a break all day and was feeling dehydrated and hungry, so he decided that he would have it near the end of his shift. A team leader came up the stairs and asked him what he was doing. He explained the above and she hit the roof shouting at him to get back on the shop floor and that it was unacceptable to have a lunch break so close to his shift end, even though he had been working all day without water. It seems that the management lack people skills and need to treat staff as they would like to be treated.
To the Tesco dotcom worker (Ipswich).
I know of drivers who have worked their notice at the Ipswich branch and have puposely been given the longest and largest delively van loads to make the rest of their stay a Tesco's a nightmare, and that one team leader always gets the shortest runs. That's equality for you!

Our store manager will not allow water on the checkout because the new checkouts are a risk for electrocution, especially if it is knocked over the new scales. When I'm on the shop floor,I'm allowed to pop upstairs and get a quick drink if I'm thirsty...I thought it was the same everywhere!
i work for tescos as a dept manager and i am human, the problems that i see is that there are far too many young managers who do not have a mind of their own or know how to treat and talk to staff. I feel that 30+ managers treat the staff in a way that they should be treated, the younger ones are just out to make a name for themselves and if you dare have an opinion you are being negative so you cant win, dont blame the managers as we are not all the same.

As for drinking water i seem to remember being made to watch a dvd very reccently which was about keeping us all in better shape for work,
which clearly said we should be drinking more water each day!clips of staff drinking water on the shop floor,doing excercise on the shop floor,and as we all know YOU CANT BE REFUSED CLEAN DRINKING WATER,but we are.....because this is MIGHTY TESCO!

As for attendance reviews,
ALWAYS question your %,ask your manager to show you how they worked it out,
the formula/calculation they used,and then work it out for yourself,because out of the last 3 times ive been quoted a figure for my abscence they have ALL BEEN WRONG.

Vever fail to question them about anything such as bankholidays either because they lie through their back teeth all the time just so they dont have to pay out more wages.

i have been working for tesco for just under a year. my overal view at tesco is very mixed on one side they are a great comapny to worker for. i mean my experiance is ive had two promotion and coming to two pay rise in the first year i have worked and being on option give me differant skills i need to be a mananger. but on the other hand they lead with iron fisted. many manager a just doing what we want to do. do our shift and get home, i meanthere is some manager in the bussiness that can some what pushy and have high hope what need done on every day to day running of the bussines. sometime the presure from senior team/store manager can influance your day as simple not likeing the back areas be untidy or your department be a mess or not tidy enough or no point of sale is out. so i feel the GA general assistant are due a well deserived pat on the back specaily the ppl who stay for many of years in the bussiness. on the water subject i feel ive got tesco side of this cos if your full time member 36.5hrs you get a one and half hr break and that long a enough to have your drinks and somthing to eat. but if your part time for every 4 hrs you work your intitled 15 min break. ok ive went on a bit but i do belive tesco has this one covered

They state "All staff are entitled to reasonable rest breaks, access to toilets, rest facilities and portable water at their place of work"
Water at tills is not a problem, if its in a sports bottle the risk of spilling is slight. If a spill resulted in electrocution then the equipment will fail on safety. What would happen if a customers bottle of drink broke?
There are rest breaks (big deal) we also used to send children up chimneys. Its called progress. A regular intake of water keeps dehydration at bay and is healthy.
If Tesco publish a Human Rights Policy they should ensure they put their policies into practice, but of course they don't. Just a bunch of bullies throwing their weight about, because they think that's the way to behave.
And I agree that the older Managers are human, the younger Managers should be mentored until they learn and gain experience.
I am a manager and feel these comments to be very harsh! Fair enough I am a younger manager and may not have full life expirence you are constantly learning through out your career.
Policies such as SYA are there as guidlines on how to deal with staff taking excess time off work. It isnt as straight forward as you are over your percentage here is a warning you can give next steps etc instead as i have many times. For example someone hurting their back out of work I didnt give a warning I gave the next step to always find another member of staff to lift heavy objects for her, as a resulting helping to improve her attendance.
Also about us not getting on with general assistants this is totally wrong! We regulary have a laugh at work and even out of work in the pub I always go to see people in my store and have a general laugh. A day would be very boring if you didnt enjoy each others company
i have been working with tesco for last 4 years, so far i have found 2 good managers. rest of the managers are idiots . they havent got any management experience. they show power always and treat staffs badly. oh yea about sick they dont think you are human being. you can go sick .
Tesco should empoly educated MBA's as a manager. not those workining in tesco 20 years and become managers. what you can expect from those .

I dont work for tesco but i hear your illness policy sucks, you sacked my friends mum for takeing days off work even when supplied with a doctors note, do you really need to treat staff like thsi when you earn billions of £ a year , respect your staff and they will work for you treat them badly your staff will soon be east european and see how your customers like that and like being served at deli counters by those who dont understand
I worked for Tesco for nearly three years as a team leader on a fresh food department and have the following to say (to those of you who work or have worked for Tesco, c'mon, you know it's true...!)
Ok, bear with me...you have a structure that works like this: Upper Management - who knows how they got there? Maybe aliens threw them out as they flew by in their space craft? They generally stay in their offices for the majority of their time, apart from when someone even more important than they are comes to visit the store. Then you'll find Mr Upper Management, pre-visit barking orders at some unfortunate soul about some imaginary problem or, during-visit, strolling around with said visitor, pretending to be friends with all the staff (usually giving the game away by getting their names wrong).
Next we have middle management - this is an odd creature. With the occasional, glorious, notable exception, section and line managers are not the hardest working, most intelligent, or diligent members of staff. No, they're the ones who learned the party line and can spout all the company clichés and jargon, whilst following very few of the policies themselves. Tesco is a place where you will be promoted if your face fits, or possibly related to another manager; but it's unlikely to be based on your work, abilities or dedication. These lovely people are then let loose on the next level...
Lower management - these are team leaders, office staff and the like. They are generally not allowed to be in the management 'club' so are not welcome at the manager table in the canteen or chatted to during meetings that they have to attend. They are, however, expected to perform as a 'proper' manager whenever the manager isn't present, track figures, work out rotas, attend various figures and waste-of-time-cos-nothing-ever-gets-done meetings, still perform whatever your job was before you became team leader and take the rap for anything and everything that anyone above you gets wrong whilst keeping up the morale of your overworked colleagues and team up. All with the promise that if you can prove yourself, you'll get promoted. Oh if it were true.
Which leads us to the next level, ground floor if you will, the amazing general assistants. There are so many of these people who genuinely want to offer the absolute best in quality of service, product, environment and experience. They believed the glossy leaflets and slick videos that you see during the recruitment process, showing great working conditions, fantastic perks and discounts, standards of customer service that are second to none, the opportunity for anyone and everyone to progress up the company ladder with personalised training, etc, etc, etc. The truth is they bear little in common with the grubby reality of working for Tesco. There are GAs out there who strive every day to meet high personal standards of service; these people are awesome and I, even if very few others seem to, stand up and salute you for all you do.
But I'm not going to pretend that Tesco stores are full of eager little beavers all waiting to tend to customer needs because I know that's far from the truth. I know that there are lazy, selfish, mealy mouthed, unpleasant people working within Tesco and you're right to complain about them - get the name from their badge and ask customer service to call the duty manager. That way it will be officially logged.
But before you do that, ask yourself, is it actually the member of staff who you're frustrated with, or is it the company? Is it really the fault of the girl on the till that the bar code on your chicken won't scan and you have to wait for a couple of minutes? Is it the fault of the person who served you the chicken in the first place? Or perhaps, the person who you should really be being cross with is the store manager, for not sorting out the equipment in his store out properly.
So, after three years my balanced (?) opinion is that on the whole Tesco expect far too much from, and give far too little to their employees. Most members of staff are expected to do the work of two as stores are constantly being asked to reduce their wages bills. If a person quits (but why would you?!), they just won't be replaced. Overtime is not authorised at all, except on Sundays. There is a culture of negativity where praise is rarely given and criticism without solution is freely distributed; staff are having their souls crushed.
One last thing, just in case you're wondering why I carried on working for them for so long; my heart is in retail but many of the smaller local retail businesses have closed down since Tesco came along. So my choices at the time were to work for my local Tesco, or the one a couple of miles further up the road. Or alternatively I could jump on a bus and travel to the next closest supermarket. Oh would you believe it, it's a Tesco store. Don't let me get started on that one....
I was lucky enough to secure a place at university as a mature student to enable me to broaden my options, but not everyone can make such a choice, nor has the desire to do so. Smarten up Tesco before you lose all your decent staff; it will be very difficult to stay top of the heap with the quality of staff that are willing to subscribe to such an unfair and bullying corporate mentality.
I've been working for Tesco's for just over three years now. It's not the worst supermarket I've worked for but most boring... Yes! I working a Metro, due to have a very small work force of about 25 and most being shriveled up prunes, conversation can be some what boring, unless you enjoy knitting talk.
I do get alot of grief from Managers, mainly for saying anymore than Yes or No, I think they would prefer mindless morons, robots or eastern Europeans. You do get alot of crap working in a Supermarket, being thick skinned works and giving as good as you get. If you let them get away with it, they will keep doing it.
Regarding water, it's a legal requirement for companies to supply staff to access to water and can be used as need be (within reason)

Erm, pardon? Badly paid? Are you trying to progress up the Tesco career ladder with some serious brown nosing? They are not badly paid, the reason why many of the moody managers are still with Tesco's is because they carn't find anywhere else that will pay them the same wage for the little amount of work they do.
I spent over 15 years in retail, I have run Larger food stores and non food stores. I always treated people how I wanted to be treated myself, I got my hands dirty on a daily basis and got stuck in with the grafting.
However There are a large number of managers who absorb all they are brainwashed with; by their training depts, who are actually total social failures. These misfits (or Managers as they like to title each other) should be kept separate from others, not allowed to roam free, God forbid with any burden of power. This minute power affects these misfits (I mean managers) and goes to their heads, thus creating a monster.
I have seen these monsters in many stores. We should be allowed at least one Hunting season a year for these types!!
I'm quite sad to be leaving.
I'm a big bloke but strangely enough this leaves me open to other big blokes, some short blokes and a few wimmin trying to bully me. It seems to have happened to me at quite a few places I've worked but never at Tesco.
I can imagine that some stores are a nightmare and others are ok. It's a bit hit and miss.
The managers are obviously working to tight deadlines..they always look pressurised, reminds me of working in franchise garages when the managers and sales staff were on that Pendell[?] selling system.
I've found my line manager [a youngish woman] very fair...I sorta fancy her. The Team leader is a bit of a jobsworth and is looking to train up for management but he only wound me up once or twice when I started and I made the odd mistake, but he's a bit of a paper tiger. I like my work colleagues and will miss them as we got fairly friendly, exchanged pressies and stuff at Christmas.
Like i say, many of the managers are cool and offhand, but I sorta understand why.
I'm leaving just before I gain my privilege card, which is sad. I presume I give them 28days notice..I'll find out in two days when I go back after a 2 week holiday.
I'm quite sad about leaving and think I would have ended up with a few close friends there.

Ive worked for the company now for 8 years.
Last week there was a complaint made against me. A customer accused me of having my hand down my underware, scratching my arse and 'having a good rout around down there' while on a checkout..like wtf??? Even if I did do something like that, why would I do it on a checkout for all to see??
Anyway, I had a brief informal meeting tues about it, but the managers doing it wanted to go home, so when I got home I told a friend on facebook what had been going on. Friday afternoon im called in the office to continue the meeting, and they go nuts that I discussed it on facebook, despite not even mentioning the word tesco. They say ive brought the company into disrepute and will now be having a disciplinary about it and the original complaint.
As for the complaint, the managers said in front of my witness too, 'the customer is always right' and that its my word against the customers, that the customer is obviously correct and I am a liar. I demanded to check the cctv footage of the time the incident apparently happened for proof of the 'crime' being commited, but they point blank REFUSE to look at the images, saying they dont need too. 8 years service and they would rather believe a random customer than my word.
And last week, a gang of guys was threatening a checkout girl and making her feel scared for her safety..they were asked to leave. Few mins later, a bottle of wine they had opened but not paid for was found, and the police were called.
The management really do only care about money and probably consider cattle more valuable than its workers and frankly, its appaling. And its been getting worse and worse over the last couple of years.
Tesco was a pretty good company when i started 3 years ago but i have noticed it has gone down hill, my manager has no regard for any problems you may have in or out of work, if you speak to her for support she just shrugs her shoulders and walks off, but she is always quick enough off the mark when she thinks you are not doing your job properly, and only many occasions she has been proved wrong when accusing people but never gives an apology, in fact she will make your life hell as she considers it as you made her look stupid.
Several times I have been hauled into the office for a disciplinary meeting regarding work but after asking for evidence it has been proved she has got it wrong yet again but she just walks off smelling of roses, i admit she runs the shittest dept in the store but it wont run any smoother but treating the staff like crap, if she got off her arse once in a while and helped out she might realise where the problems lye but no she just loiters around doing nothing trying to look more important than she really is.
I totally disagree with these comments, i am a general assistants in a aberdeenshire store i have been working there for 9 months, i work in the chillers and our heating broke down for 2 weeks over winter, heaters were placed thoughout the store, we were told if at any point we felt cold to go and sit in the canteen for a hot drink. our water then went off for half a day and water was giving out. The checkouts are allowed water as long as it as a receipt stuck on it and the checkout
operator signature at the top. For the people that are complaning about illnesses and taking time off, it will go above 3% but you can go to a manager and ask if you can do a shift of the person who did yours and it will get marked as a shift swap. Our managers are always friendly they are always asking if we need any help, they are always asking how we are, maybe all u moaning people should try and be nice to them instead of bad mouthing them. last month we did our think 25 training and everybody was given a £5 doulbe up token. we have a selection of free items in our canteen at all times that any of the staff can take. so if you dont like working at tesco quit and go work at asda and see how they treat you there.
I've worked at Tesco before on home shopping and I really didn't like it, boring atmosphere, sarcastic management which go out of their way to nit pick about anything, bullying, no thankyou or good morning (despite saying it myself!) and just being ignored. And no bloody music to keep us happy!
I think management should realise if they treat their staff like that they're going to loose customers as well as removing any good attitude new startes came in with.
I work at ASDA now. Management there are better and a lot of them have said they know how bad Tesco can treat their staff mentally and wonder how they get any motivation out of them at all.
Morrisons who I worked for before Tesco, at the interview they could only give me short hours. I said I couldn't accept such short hours and so would probably have to say yes to Tesco. Manager at Morrisons advised me against working there.
having said that, not a good place to work It's a good place to shop if a bit boring and 'samey'
i have since discovered that as they say *unless your face fits* you get nothing from tesco apart from a wage.
I was promised weekends off permenantly but it depended on time spent in the job,available hours to swap the day and where i was in the queue.
Then along comes an employee,been there less time than i have but because they did favours which involved working on their day off getting their weekend shift off (something I wasnt given an option for),they now have the weekend off permenantly.
Pissed off to say the least because even though I love my job,why am I busting my bum to get what I feel is basically s**t on from a big height.

I work at tesco Milngavie. I find that for the most part, the relationship between management and staff is very good. There are one or two less friendly ones, but all in all they aren't malicious.
As for allowing water on tills, we were shown a health training video that specifically says you should bring a bottle of water to your till. If you work on the floor you aren't supposed to have one, but may go and get some from the canteen whenever you like (within reason).
I feel this has nothing to do with good company policy, but more because we are a local store where everyone knows each other and work up through here if they wish.
When it comes to the illness issue, well, I have a real problem with it. I work only a few hours a week, so one shift automatically takes me over the 3%. However, most managers do understand this. It does often feel like they assume you were skiving though.
If a manager won't let you have water on a till, then tell them that tesco policy specifically states you can, and more importantly law requires access to water at work.

As a previous store manager for Tesco in Ireland I can tell you that the welfare & health of an employee is of the least importance to the company, the most important issue for the company is the financial cost, always the financial cost. Of course employees will be asked about there health and what can be done to help them back to work but I can assure you that this is not genuine but merely going through a process. What the company really wants to do is off load some payroll if it can and if this means managing someone out of the business because they are out sick a number of times then so be it. This practice would be encouraged by higher levels in the company and is.
I am a student and i Work in the Pembury branch of Tesco. Sure managers have their off days but i've never been treated with anything other than total respect. Staff, Team Leaders and Store managers alike go out of their way to be friendly and obliging. I get paid well and enjoy my job and can do nothing but sing the praise's of how Tesco treat their employees. I dont know about other branches but we are defiantly allowed to drink water as long as we are not serving a customer. Mine is just one experience, but the whole of Tesco should not be tarred with this callus brush.
I worked in a Tesco for 3 years. There were good managers and bad managers, good general assistants and those that took the piss. At the end of the day they are all just humans like the rest of us. I find the comments which say, "I worked at Tesco for 13 years and got treated like muck" quite ridiculous. Who in their right mind would stay that long in such a place?
i work for e,on instore in tesco and was removed from the store for chewing chewing gum but it was mainly the attitude of the store manager who didn,t explain to me that to be part of the tesco team i had to have smelly breath what next a ban on getting washed before entering the jungle because treating staff in this manner is nothing more than zoo keeping?

i work in the dotcom department and it is awful, the job itself is boring but that doesnt really matter. One of our team leaders is really good very hard working and treats people with respect.
on the otherhand we have recently got a new teamleader and he is an egocentric arrogant bastard who is completely incompetant. he only got the job because he is friends with our manager and can get away with anything, the general opinion is that he has something on our manager so anything he does wrong is swept under the carpet.
our manager is incompetant, rude, arrogant, egocentric and a idiot. he expects miracles off everyone, he doesnt do weekends and then has a go at you if you have a day off sick. he moans if you want a bank holiday off but does none of them himself, and for the week before christmas and a few days before easter we have to do 4am starts, and again you get moaned at if you say you cant do one or two of them when it is your choice whether or not to do them and he (the manager) does not do any of them.
most of the managers in the store are miserable hate-filled idiots. there are one or two nice managers who treat you with respect and most of the teamleaders are very nice people but they are definatly in the minority.

TESCO staff are idiots in my opinion. I ordered salt and vinegar crisps they didn't have any, so what do they get me instead SALT VINEGAR AND BLACK PEPPER CRISPS.. whoever did my shopping was stupid and lacked common sense, if there are no salt and vinegar crisps of my brand you get SALT AND VINEGAR crisps of another brand. Pure imbecilic.
Tesco are the WORST company in the entire world to work for! I have had 9 months of hell at their hands because they repeatedly do not deal with issues in the workplace ie bullying which isnt even by a manager. Even the personnel manager, who for the record is an up herself little bitch, didnt want to deal with it and when an investigation was put forward even though there was substantial evidence of time stealing and personal shopping during work hours, they punished me for speaking up and putting everything down to a personality issue. I think how people who work for tesco are treated is an absolute disgrace and i can see in reading this that its not just my store it goes on in, its the company as a whole because in the end all they care about is money, not the people who are slaving for a shitty wage to make them it. Im a student and as soon as i have my degree i will be leaving the shitting place for good and will be tellign every single swine who has treated me badly how i feel about them and how shit at their jobs they are. i am a line manager for at 20 year old. I dont think it fair to brand all managers with the samae brush. I left school with 5 a/b highers and one b advanced higher then done 6 months of uni before deciding to fast track managment. They pay up to 24000 a year in your first year. But we do have to follow set policy with staff that ensures that everyone is treated fairly. It is then up to individual managers to make the relevent decisions. But many times they are told to disapline by senior team and if you hint that it was not your decision you are then disaplined. However they do not speak out as often because then their personell integrity is called into question!
I am so glad I found this website. I thought only our store had arseholes in management. The attendance policy is crap, and the abuse we have to put up with from managers defies belief. One manager regularly tells her staff "get the f**k out and f**kin start to "f**kin work f**kin now", and shes even completed her "dignity at work" workshop! And now they are even forcing us to work anti social hours and we are told if we don't like it to leave. If there wasn't a recession or if Asda opened near us about 90% of the staff would leave and tell them where to shove it.

As for the person who got the wrong crisps, that is just another example of tesco attempting to crush any initiative out of their staff. the way the lists for pickers are set out limits their choice of substitutes, usually to one and if that particular sub isnt available they the system wont let you sub it for something else unless you know exactly how to get around the system. there are some pickers of limited intelligence but most of the time they are put under pressure by the manager to pick as fast as possible and will sometimes just grab what is physically closer to them.
one more thing. a large number of online customers blatantly abuse the refund system. they claim that somethings have gone missing or are damaged or have a short date on them, they get their money back but dont have to prove a damned thing. there is one particular customer who buys loads of organic things and everytime she does her shopping our complaints goes sky high because she lies and claims that everyting is on a bad date but never sends it back.....i wonder why?!?!?!?

A year ago we had self service installed and now there is more shoplifting in store because people can now go up to self service scan the items and not pay but on camera it looks like they are paying. When she was confronted all she said was it happens. It is now getting really bad because a lot of staff have left and she wont employ anyone so everyone else has to work harder. She never tells you to take a break but she makes sure she gets hers. Now she is telling us to not rotate stock and get it out on the shelves as quickly as possible. We are consistently finding out of date stock on the shelves. Has anyone else got a manager that doesnt rotate stock?

Im a GA and i work on Stock Control which involves a routine called 'Potential Reductions' The stock rotation on all fresh areas (Diary, produce, plant bread etc)that i have worked on is terrible. And has for cutting down on staff, there's the same problem here also but yet they still exspect a job that requires AT LEAST 3 to finish to be done by 1 or 2 people.
I wouldnt say all managers at tesco are bad but majority are and it's hard to pick out the good ones from the bad.

proves what the managements are trained to do and say. you must be absolutley morones thinking this and saying it you have been brain washed. if you are badly and are throwing up would you come in what happened if its a genuine illness that can last a few days or a long term illness how can you justify saying that it is not fair on the other staff do you mean that you was short staffed in the first place a supermarket will lots of people working for them so you are going to get illnesses may be that you didnt have the right amount of staff in to cope with this in the first place this is the problem as in all supermarkets
as for that manager that says it costs 150 to have the till repaired your staff should have sufficant breaks or be able to go and get a drink or to go to the toilet
Been working for this great company for 7 years now, I'm going to uni want a transfer and have to apply online and am told by my bitch of a personnel manager that I may not even get a place. Typical really, I made it as far as Team Leader and was bullied out of the job back to GA because I wouldn't accept the fact that I should work over the 37.5 hrs I already did. Basically what it amounts to is slave labour. They expect anyone above GA to work over their contracted hours for no extra pay or to be allowed to take that time back, hell it's even written in the contract. How can they get away with this? I long for the day when Tesco implodes from cutting staff far too much.
10 years in Tesco`s myself. GA job, and frankly, the real issue to me, is the atmosphere of distrust, and betrayal that is the norm. I really don`t understand people who work with you, side by side for years, and yet take any possible opportunity that pops up, to drop you in the shit.
This isnt a Tesco problem exclusively of course, but is certaintely rife.
What causes this do you think? Its certaintely at the point where, when I think about the older female staff, I always tend to picture them on the front row of a public hanging, smiling, handing around a bag of popcorn.

I am a checkout assistant in Tescos, Iv worked there for just over a year. All this not being allowed water is rubbish! In the store i work in we are allowed water or juice at our tills with us, as long as there is no label on the bottle. Also all this crap about being treated awful is not true. In my store everyone gets treated equally, we have great managers and all have a laugh together. I may only be a check out assistant but the management do not treat me any different then other members of staff. If you work in tescos and get treated like rubbish go to your union rep thats what they are there for! Dont come moan on here, that wont change anything.
It is not the matter of working or not working. It is about something which Tesco mentioned in its Human Rights Policy.Some managers are not simply obeying to its policy.That is not Tesco's fault. As a company Tesco is great. No doubt. But some managers make this a hell. It is because of their personal traits.People are working here for their livelihood. TO SAY THAT ALL MANAGEMENT IS RUBBISH that IS UNFAIR, IT IS HOWEVER 99% OFF THEM, recently finding a lump on my breast i had to go for a screening with the hospital, giving plenty of notice i rang to advise tesco would need to leave an hour early (5 days notice)i was advised i would have to bring proof in!!! this i found disturbing as any one who would lie about this, is sick, after presenting my team leader with the proof i was told "i had made the letter myself and told to get on a till" after sitting on the till in disbelief, i asked another team leader to speek to a manager which i was dennied for several hours!! appauling management in some tescos stores more training needed and i couldnt tell u what our store manager looks like, no one is intrested unless you are ill, then god forbid you are summonsed to a room and looked down at

Sick absence! All managers setting out the sickness policy need a reality check! Remember, We are employees not slaves. A doctors line as far as I am concerned is sufficient and support offered on return to work should be provided if the employee deems necessary. Tesco do not lose out on sick absence claims as they as do other companies,claim back all monies lost to sickpay via hmrc resulting in lower tax bill also. Do not undervalue fellow employees based on attendance alone and certainly do not think we are ignorant with regards to our rights. There are to many people in positions of trust within this company who clearly have little compassion or life experience. Just because managerment tell u to treat people like crap doesn't necessarily mean you should! Do u have a moral compasss? Do you enjoy trying to humiliate others? Because yes it is humiliating when as a responsible adult when we are repeatedly pulled up over and over again for absences that have in our mind been dealt with already. Sick absence mmm! It is demeaning to all especially those with an adequate medical certificate to be subject to this abuse. Upper management must devise a supportive network within the business that puts wellbeing at the forefront of employee relationships. Many businesses adopt strict bully tactics, example the underlying threat " your absences will affect any opportunities or job security". Results from many scientific reports relating to this subject show high staff turn over increased sick absences relating to stress conditions and poor staff morale. Bully cultures in most of these businesses were also prevalent. A respectful, relaxed supportive and indeed people focused enviroment that does not rely on stats or out of date staff performance models. Managers should lead the way in developing people skills, in themselves and d,others creating a positive atmosphere to work involving all and developing everyone's confidence in their job and their abilities. relating to this subject
In response to sick absence I myself have been on the receiving end of intense meetings where I have had to listen to " managers concerns" over my absences. I myself have a mental health condition and find these meetings very stressful and wonder why my sickline is not enough to explain my situation. Most information I provide to my employer is disregarded and many revert back to scripts from senior management. I wish management could be more supportive. I may in the end decide to just leave to avoid further psychiatric injury as stress is wearing me out. Sick of being made to feel bad about a condition I can do little to control and stress and bully tactics are not helping to alleviate my symptoms.
Do not leave! Senior management have prob already had reviews with your manager over concerns ie sick absences. You need to adopt an aassertive attitude and not give a sh*t because once you are underperforming senior management advise managers to get rid of you. What is the worst they can do? Try to humiliate u? Remember don't give two sh* ts it works! Don't be afraid tell them to go stuff em delta if their cheeky. I do and feel much better rather than being someone's victim
I work in a tesco superstore and have had two different experiences with managerment. First manager very focused on our wellbeing as well as business targets, encouraged positive environment and nipped toxic personalities in the butt straight away. Second manager didnt care less was only interested in their own intetests and created a very uncomfortable environment to work in. Also two faced and gossiped about staff and tried on numerous occasions to single out people she took a dislike to. For them to dislike u all that is required is for your face not to fit or if you question them. Wish not all managers were so petty
why is it you are a hard worker know the job inside out then someone who can talk the job but does not know what to do and picks their hours and days and where others are flexible do not get recognised within tesco management why do the biggg managers not come and work with ga's to see what they think who should be recognised within their stores to get the best for tesco

I agree senior management should make an effort to recognise, discuss and resolve the difficulties that exist for all staff in Tesco by approaching staff policy in an entirely new way. A positive policy that gives evey member of staff job satisfaction, self worth, knowledge and support. And indeed dignity.

Ive had the the past week which included sicknes and dihereaa. Accordig to tescos policy you cannt go to work for 48 hours. But when u dont go to work your disciplined. I carried on at work for that week. I had 3 days off 4 months ago and my percentage is 19% off. Im still very poorly and have to go in at half 7 tomorrow morning....what do i do?? I risk loosing my job if i dont.go in but as i woek with food, if a customer gets ill then i risk going to court and still loosing my job...
I'm a GA and have worked at 2 different Tesco's, one in MK and one in North Wales on and off over the last 2/3 years (I'm a student at uni). At both I have found a majority of team leaders and managers to be lovely and its always a great friendly atmosphere. I work on checkouts/ kiosk/ CSD and have helped on dotcom (home shopping). To the guy who said about not getting the right crisps, a. on dotcom the system automatically gives you 1 alternative that can be overridden if totally not the right thing but if its about the same you might as well go with it, b. if you don't like it return it! It's in a blue bag for a reason and you get it refunded on your card no problem. Regarding absences I missed one contracted shift last summer and as i was only contracted to one shift a week it went straight over the 3%, I had a meeting with my manager (who's lovely) as its policy and after they've chatted to you providing your being honest nothing comes of it as its just a formality. I've worked at M&S for a Christmas where the policy was similar but I'd say far more strict - if your sick 3 different times in 16 weeks you were told you would be bought before a panel of 3 managers for a disciplinary, at least at Tesco its very informal and just a question of why. Also to answer everyone complaining how rubbish/rude etc all the top managers are I have this response, just before Christmas our store manager made a point of going a round to every member of staff to shake their hand and thank them for their work over the year. He would probably come under what a lot of people complain about on here - one of the young managers who is no where near as good as the older managers, but did they do this? Would like to point out he was flanked by no one that he may want to show off to and it definitely wouldn't be the first time you see him getting stuck in and helping out with the rest of us at the bottom.
My son has been experiencing problems during his employment with Tesco.
To cut a long story short, nothing was done internally, and externally we didn't feel he was getting the level of support he should have received in relation to a number of issues relating to the treatment he has been receiving and other serious issues, so we took it to the Employment Tribunal. What amazes me is that since I have been researching Tesco, I have come across numerous sites, such as this (Which I think are a fantastic way of letting Tesco employees, whatever your rank, speak freely about what they are or have experienced). However I wondered if there are so many unhappy and mistreated employees then why don't you first go through the grievance procedures, if you are not satisfied take it to a higher level, and if you are still not satisfied take it to the Employment Tribunal. A simple solution. The more people that bring their mistreatment to the publics attention, the higher the chances of getting something done about it. It's no good simply moaning about it, or taking the first offer Tesco give you if you want to make a change. Do something about it, or unfortunately you will continue to suffer in silence. I'm sorry if this sounds like harsh advice, but it's the ony realistic advice I can give.

I work for a dotcom store, when I started the pick rate was 150ish per hour. It has since been increased more and moretill we were at what they said was 184 items per hour. They passed on thanks from above the other day, congratulating us for hitting this new target.

We got the news that as a result of hitting target, the pick rate was to be increased to 190 items per hour.
I think they will continue till people keel over with heart attacks etc.
If we have equipment problems,wrong items on shelves etc., even if we go to the loo, the clock is still ticking, so our pick rate drops away.
They know that jobs are still hard to find in this area, and there are plenty of others waiting outside the door for a job, so they have us over a barrel.

To anonymous with a son working for Tesco,Many people may feel that going through a tribunal proceedure is all very well, but afterwards, whatever the outcome, we still need a job, and therefore have to go back and work for and with these people. As these are not too plentiful at the moment, this takes a lot of guts, or you take them to a tribunal, and get enough dosh out them to not need a job afterwards.

Hi, I have been a member of tesco staff for nearly two years now and I started off working with customer service. I became quite handy at the front of store by training staff for customer services and even jumping on to become a temporary team leader for checkouts. I progressed so much that tesco had made my contract permenant and also increased my hours which made me the only full time member of staff under a team leader in my store...
Back in march I felt that I achieved so much that I wanted to learn another department and with right hours right place becoming an issue the manager agreed that this would be good... Three managers have placed me on the options list but yet my store is so slack that I am still waiting a year and a half on. Anyway I moved to become a fishmonger in my store and have picked it up really well but over the past few weeks things have become horrid.
I should tell you that I have depression and a few weeks ago I was flying high and felt great giving me the idea to come off my tablets so I proceeded with this and unfortunately I had some withdrawal symptoms and had a few days off which took my absence level to 3.71%. I received a verbal warning. In the past few weeks I have had a new manager and she is great at giving me the support I need but as I have felt down since this disciplinary I have not been enjoying my work and it affect my health even more..
My team leader is extremely critical and if it's not done her way then she will pick on you and in my case since I have requested a departmental transfer all she has done is go out of her way to make my working life hell... Even to the extent of writing out a whole page of team 5 points basically aimed at me and which other members of my team on the counters have pick up on and agreed that she is picking on me... I try telling my manager but they stick up for their team leaders thinking that the sun shines out of their backside but how do I tell them that they don't....
My hours on the department are all over the place as this is left to my team leader to arrange but we only get them three days before we're ment to start them and they are not my contacted hours..
Basically I strongly feel that I am being bullied at work and there is nothing I can do but sit and weather out the storm....
Since last autumn I have had just 3 shifts off for because of being very ill. I only work 3 a week so had to have an attendance review. I felt like the whole time I was being interrogated and called a liar. I generally was sick but now cant be sick again for about 6 months or I will face disciplinary action. I don't feel this Is right and have really lost respect for the company that I love working for Tesco. One problem for them was the week before I was I'll one weekend I phoned in saying I was ill cause I to be blunt had the sh**s . I felt better by the evening when I was due to work so phoned in saying that I would be coming in. They brought this up and asked if I had problems with this shift. It was just and unfortunate coincidence. Not sure why this mattered though because I did come in and give it a go.
I have been working for 7 years now, 2 yrs as manager and it doesn't get any better. I am still treated without respect by my managers and expected to work like a machine each day and the targets keep getting steeper each week. I am so depressed now with my life that I have been away from work for 2 wks now. I have followed the absence policy and let my manager know. Yet he keeps texting me or calling me every day asking for updates or that I have not updated him about things.. Is this fair? Can I complain about it? What are my rights?
You should not tolerate being texted and pestered while on sick leave, but saying that you should keep your line manager/ PM updated often. You can complain to your Group PM but it wouldn't really get you anywhere.
You are allowed to have water while working but the expectation is you dont drink while serving customers, you wait till they leave. Service is after all what we are all paid to deliver.
If you have loads of sporadic absence with no signs of improvement then you will face disciplinary action after all we have all signed a contract agreeing to work a set contracted hours...(managers have the same policy and if anything we are treated worst than our staff are). Do you know how much harder your colleagues and friends have to work to cover your sickness?!!
If you really hate working for Tesco that much then leave, we really dont want people who dont want to be here working for us. After all for each vacancy we have we get about 30 applicants. And in todays climate people should be greatfull for a job!!
If you are not happy with the way the Management team treat you then have your say in your stores! Sometimes we dont realise how we come across and feedback is always welcomed. You can do this in your viewpoints, forum meetings or even in your annual reviews with your line manager. If it is that bad then complain to your PM.
Managers are under a lot of pressure to deliver the results but we can not do this without working together with our staff
I never even got bloody far enough to work for Tesco, I did 3 hours of my induction until I got a phone call saying my close family member had their jaw broken and was taken to hospital. Obviously worried, my parents picked me up and we went to the hospital. Crying when I spoke to the manager I was reassured and told that they would ring me and let me know when the next induction is. It's been 2 months, i've called over 18 times and not a single reply or call back. It's outrageous how we are treated and there is no chance I'm working there and this is all before i've even bloody started. Awful company, lucky I didn't leave my other job to work at Tesco.

Well, I think this is a load of tosh. You are allowed water at the tills, either in a clear bottle with No labels, or with a receipt. This is to make sure you haven't been shop lifting. It's even in the staff handbook, Maybe you should check it out. I don't think the managers are the issue, It's the team leaders on power trips and the lazy staff. Most jobs will punish staff for taking large amounts of time off on the sick, the 3% margin is more than fair. I have had 1 day of sickness in 8 and a half years. I understand that some people get ill, but most people won't even go into work if they have the sniffles.... and I hardly think It's appropriate to plaster family related suicide attempts on the internet!

I really think it depends on what store you work at.
I myself, get along really well with most of the managers. You can have a laugh with them and they mostly are very friendly.
But there can also be times where they are having a bad day which is just human.
I myself work on produce, which is a very fast moving department with lots of things that need doing.
So far I have not really had any issue with my managers and they do do a good job. But they are under a lot of stress to reach their targets.
Our store manager is always pretty friendly and acknowledges you and thanks you for your work, so is our deputy manager. And you are quite often seeing them getting hands on doing the stuff us GA's do as well.
The only person I do not really like is my team leader. She does not do that much work, and is always disappearing of for extra breaks. For example she will get you to stop what you are doing just to do one task that she could of done a lot quicker herself, but instead she gets you to do it while she has a fag for 15mins. That is what annoys me.
But I do think alot of the problem is some of the customers. They do not seem to realise how hard they can make our lives. And how much money they can cost the store.
They will just leave food everywehre, behind cereal the hole works. And most of it will be chilled stuff that will need to be chucked away. They take off trays and leave them on the floor, mix everything up. Stand by the doors that lead to the warehouse and when you try and ask them to move because you don't want the doors to smack them in the face they look at you like you are a piece of shit.
Of course this is not the case for all of them, some are very friendly but there are always some that can make your day go from good or bad. I have even had one drunken twat spit in my face after she had been asked to leave the premises several times.
And I must admit the managers were very good about it. They let me go sit down, have some tea to get myself together again whislt waiting for the police to come.
Also had a few people threaten to beat the crap out of me for standing behind their car whilst waiting for another car to pull out.
Just remember this also happpens to the manager, just because they are in a bit of a mood don't take it to harshly on them. I'v seen customers get all up in there faces just because another customer left a trolley outside there house. We are all human, and there is just so much you can take.
Oh and about the water, if i'm on checkouts they will just go grab me some water of the shelf if i'm thirsty lol.
I work at tesco for 6 years as customer service assistant and like others say, there are customers soooo rude to us with attitude and sometimes team leader or manager are not here to give support and we have to swallow their shitty talk...!!! As for attendence am very upset about their sickness policy becoz as human being , we are meant to be genuinly sick at time but soooo frustrated to call sick because of " warning or disciplinary note or whatever" .. It hapen to me that customer gave me tissues to blow my nose , i got so runny nose and not feeling comfortable.... Another time i had urine infection and its the same thing, am sooo scared to ask to go home coz there isnt much staff..;-( .. But most of my checkout colleagues support each other as we know the feeling.. And also holiday is like a headache when when being request from managers.. Never get the date you want.. In a whole am not saying its the worst place to work as i get my living from there BUT it would be really nice if things could change little bit to build motivation at workplace.. Simple as that..!!!

They caught me of guard and made me fear for my job! I only work 1 day a week and have never been off sick in the year I've been there until now, and when they mentioned disciplinary action I literally thought "Shit I'm going to lose my job... just because I missed 2 days off!?!" They've let it go cuz this is the only time it has happened.
But it's like I can't be off sick on the say I work cuz I'll get another attendance review!?! It's so unfair how they treat their staff! All the managers get together in their little bubble and just kiss each others asses! You can't complain about one otherwise the others will defend them!!!
They've even bugged me about my fringe length (I'm male btw)! it was covering 1 eye but it was easy to flick away, but she and my team leader came up and told me to get it cut... I went around and asked can they say that? everyone I asked said NO!
So I planned to document everything they said to me and complain to Head Office about them both if it carried on. Keep in mind no customers ever complained about it, and there were other staff members who had longer fringes than mine!

I used to work for them in the distribution ctr. One night the water got cut off somehow so I asked one the managers if we could get bottled water from the picking area. He had to ask a shift manager who in turn told me to go back to work, I will get a drink when the water comes back on. I immediately took off my work equipment and said "I'm going home for a drink" I walked into the shift managers office and told him that he is ridiculous. He was none too happy but he did change his mind over the bottled water.
They are a terrible company to work for and any opportunity I have to ruin their reputation I use. Stay clear if you have an option. They remind me of the old kwik save company. Cheap and nasty, dirty, untidy stores and bullies to their employees.

I've worked at Tesco for six months because I was desperate for a job. So far I have only come across one manager who has actually treated me like a human being. The majority of the managers in my store have lost touch with the staff, are too concerned with meeting targets and cutting corners.
I work in dot com at the moment, we're allowed to have water as long as it stays out the back. But our manager is the worst. She treats us like two year olds, yells at us for the slightest mistake and isn't at all helpful. I don't think she understands the job we do very well. I recently came back from a week's holiday and as soon as I turned up she yelled at me from across the room for something I hadn't done. Even our team leaders hate her and are getting fed up with her behaviour because she keeps making stupid rules that stop us from doing our job properly. (Like not looking in the back for items unless you get a team leader to help you.)Also, she treats you like she owns your soul and shouts at you if can't do overtime. Some of us like to have lives outside of work.
I think Tesco choose people who can shout the loudest to be managers rather than people who are actually good at their job. There are too many power-crazed, egotisical managers with no people skills and they just create a bad atmosphere to work in.

I was supposed to be on a weeks training through staffline for Tesco depot in Lichfield, now on the first day we where given options of what shift you want, I choose the night shift and so do three others.now when four trainees turn up for work a night shift And can't get into the gate of the company to start work, and four employees are buzzing the intercom to get out of the grounds cos they havn't been issued swipe cards yet and they work for Tesco.myself I climbed over the gate to gain entrance to start my night shift, I got into shit forcclimbing over a gate I shouldn't have to because they had one old man doing a two man job.Tesco warehouse has a system where when you leave the building they have a machine where you have to press a button everybody who leaves has to press the button that will determine weather you pass or get searched, and if it says search then you have to be searched, so when that person gets searched you need one person to search and one person to be able to let people out through the gate or in if that person doesn't have a swipe card to get in or out. So you need two people to cover the job, and in Lichfield branch only had one old man on the job to search people and let people on the premises.now if Tesco's own haven't swipe cards and want to get in or out and they got one man searching someone they are supposed to by rights have another person to be able to man the gate and let people in or out who have not got swipe cards to get in, which they did not do, so I was inpatient and climbed the gate to get into work to start my shift because I didn't want us trainees to be late into work, but I did apologise for climbing the gate but it still ain't good enough me appologising, but no sorry from them for not running a place properly by having two men do a job they got one old man to do. So now they don't want me to finish my training because I made a mistake in my approach to start work, and they can't admit they made a mistake in their search and entry section... but luck them reading Tesco warehouse is run properly how it should be....Lichfield branch is backwards compared to reading who have got it sorted..Lichfield need to learn from the masters at Reading..

Tesco allow exceptions for those who speak to them aggressively and work full time but those who are part time and are respectful employees are stripped from any rights. The attitude towards those who work part time is who cares they are only here to make money whilst at university or college. I am shocked and am currently looking for a job which sticks to their policies and procedures.
My first day at a Tesco Extra Store!! Worked 5 hours before being called for a break!! Was shadowing a girl on checkouts then told to go alone what with half an hour training. I looked around and found no one behind me!! Was apparently put on busy end aisle, was constantly asking members of staff for help, kept moving me around checkouts, glad to get home after 10 hour shift. Was so upset been treated very poor come on Tesco where is the training! Kept apologising to disgruntled customers and telling them it was my first day!!
Tesco talk about going extra for customers!! When I served customer today with bread they said we asked the baker if he could slice the bread for us but he replied I can't my wife's picking me up now.... Enough said custo et service is shit

Yes, a union investigator should be looking into this, but I don't somehow think a Useless Seven Days A Week union person would be much use, and would probably side with Tescos.
If you want a real union, I'd suggest the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World) who don't exist to peddle any agenda except that of the workers who make up the union.

In response to the post about the IWW. Unfortunately the only union Tesco recognises at the moment is Usdaw, I'd recommend dual carding and at any moment Usdaw start slacking get advice and guidance from the IWW and of course recruit as many fellow workers into the wobs (every little helps) as possible, then they have no choice but to recognise!
On working for Tesco the place is an absolute cesspit,every day is mundane and some managers are so far up their own arse it's almost funny. I am currently plotting my escape never to return to this shit tip and I can't wait.

The flexi contract is a joke. Felt like i was on call 247. Having a home / work life balance was impossible. I never had a life and felt criminal asking for anytime off. The rotas were constantly changed without any asking. Hated it there so much. Then you got the managers attitude towards the staff to contend with, a whole day off for christmas!!!!! WoW. When working when there is no public transport its deemed as 'my problem' im thru with such a horrid and vile company. Go sainsburys everyone...
The only way to deal with these bullies is to face them head on. Someone I know has been bullied for years by various management , all came to a head in November. Tesco have been taken to the ET, the person is now waiting judgement and remedies. The store responsible is Osterley, the same store that disallowed a disabled child to use his wheelchair. I do not work for Tesco, so they can't come back at me for voicing my personal opinion. Stand up for your rights and take them to the ET, this is the only way to get the people in HO to take notice and, the only way to stop these bullies.
Do not trust USDAW. During an ET the union rep lied under oath more than once and this can be proved and was proved. You would be safer going alone than asking the union for help. The rep in my friends case did everything she could to back the managers even though she knew in order to do so she would have to lie, this did no stop her lying. You would be better off saving your monthly subscription and enlisting the help of someone impartial, because when the chips ate down the union rep and HR will back Tesco, not the employee. Don't be afraid to take them on at an ET, although daunting, as long as you are telling the truth, you have nothing to worry about. It took almost 2 years from start to finish, BUT if the same situations arise, no doubt Tesco will be taken to the ET again!
On an 18.5hr flexi contract i had no life. Last xmas was awful. Payday landed on my supposed day off. Which they just gave me unwanted overtime on. And was told i had to do it. So was reduced to xmas shopping in my breaks. Worked xmas eve 10 - 8 considering its a 3 hour round trip. No busses after 6pm on xmas eve either. Was told it was my problem. Anyway got a lift home by 10pm felt so unchristmassy. Drank a bit. Woke up miserable xmas day. Then as soon as it begun it had ended. Ready for another 7 am get up boxing day. Im now unemployed and skint. But at least i have a christmas to look forward to.
Merry tesco xmas... had the option of prob going back. But the company is that bad id rather be unemployed. In my 20plus years of retail exp i have never in my life encountered such tyrants.
I used to smoke and have nothing against anyone that smokes but i get so annoyed when staff members go outside for a smoke allowed by team members but if u dont smoke and are chatting to a member of staff instead of working u ie: a 30 second conversation u are getting told off
Team leaders im in my 50s female have to empty cages with wine and beers on and u have teenagers on tills pressing butons hard job i dont think so annoying

Im disgusted by the way tesco treat their staff. The managers and team leaders need lessons on how to speak to the staff. You were told what to tick at the viewpoint which i didnt do. Feel for you over worked, underpaid staff over christmas. There till very late xmas eve, starting early boxing day. Being forced to work hours you dont wanna work....(evil flexi-contract) having no say in anything. I felt trapped and bullied into doing all hours. So glad i quit.

Making Moments Happen..Um?..not quite! The moral in our store is appalling...everyone feels that senior team are only looking after themselves & spend most of their time walking around on their mobiles..Red or amber call to checkouts..rather than just jumping on a till for 5 mins, they spend another 5 mins getting staff from other departments to come & do the simple task! Treat others how you like to be treated yourself? One Team, The Tesco Team....my arse! We could get that spirit back if the Store wasn't warned of any official visit & uppe senior management saw a true picture of everyday running of a store. I'm sure there are some stores that do it really well but the one's with crap management really do meed sorting out, before the company goes down the pan, with sn even bigger loss of sales than 2.4 % We could be as good as ee were, several times over the last 16yrs I've worked for the company! i have worked for TESCO for 3 and a half years i York ( askham bar store) . The problem is the managers they are twats. Ive been blackmailed on many occasions. for instance, my contracted day didnt fall on boxing day last year so i did not have to work it under any circumstances. My checkout manager was forcing me to work it and basically said well just you remember when you want favours in the future. basically blackmail. she was horrible saying who is going to serve our customers. another time . i was rang in ill and she then asked for my doctors number , which they cant do !! she didnt believe i was ill. the managers are pricks. I get on well with the rest of checkout staff but its the manaagers who treat you like pure and utter shit. TESCO Need to be sued for their behaviour. when they knew my grandma was dying of cancer they had the cheek to ask how long she will have left so they can plan cover for my time off. i really hope the pricks read these comments because they know who they are. i fucking hate the bastard managers at tesco askham bar store in York!!
I Have worked for Tesco on nights for over 10 years and been a GA, team leader and manager at different times.The first few years were really good and it felt like a team atmosphere. Things changed when 2 new managers(1 senior team, 1 section manager) came in together from a previous store, they recruited 1 team leader and pushed them up to manager(more hours/no extra pay) as they had a personality where they can be programmed to say/do whatever they are told. I also got stepped up(more responsibility, more hours with no extra pay) as TL and worked under the section manager brought in then stepped up again as manager when the section manager stepped up at another store . senior manager put me under immense pressure and threatened me with demotion many times as we already were under staffed and senior manager told me to tell staff they can't go home until job is done but I'm not stupid and I wouldn't do this, also if there was 3 bits of cardboard on the floor more than 6 inches then I would get a red light and would have to go shout at the staff but again I never did this, if cages were 2 inches sticking out of the checkouts then I would be shouted at(store is closed at night so no customer)in private senior manager would call staff derogatory names/swear words. For me I knew things had to change as a lot of the staff are friends and the store wasn't in a good place so I took on the role as a spy(no extra pay but a lot of reward) and I had a trusted GA who I gave information and knowledge to and they passed it on to pre-agreed others so a lot of grievances could be raised through bullying/ discrimination and various other titles and this forced the regional team to take notice and within a few months the senior manager and there sidekick that senior manager promoted were scrambling and blaming each other for what happened as we had witness statements and grievances signed by more than 10/15/20 people. Still no-one suspected me as my trusted GA and me kept our distance and planned things like a military operation.I felt I was doing the right thing for Tesco as the values are there for a reason for everyone to go by including the managers. On nights managers can get away with more trouble then daytime. Things calmed down for a few years(1 senior manager at a time for nights)then another bad one came so me and my GA stepped up again, this time I was threatened with demotion, so accelerated our plans to get senior manager out and within a few months they were gone after mass grievances to senior manager and any manager who supported him. Same has happened with personnel managers here. People have to realise that sometimes the most powerful position is the GA as they can have less to lose then the managers and they have a lot of options available to them. Mass grievances and witness statements are what get results- not to personnel manager but to regional team. Managers like it when you are in fear of your job so you are more easily controlled. flexi contracts are just the first step, next will be the team leader job dissolving, some manager jobs dissolved, then full time contracts will be changed to flexi contracts so you get a choice of either working the hours given or will be discipline if you don't turn up- all under 'needs of the business'

Worked in Tesco Ireland for just over two years, handed in my resignation few weeks ago only to get suspended from work(for not apologising to a co-worker that claimed I was being aggressive to them) 7 days before I was due to leave. I have had no bad records or ever been off sick, no warnings, nothing whatsoever. Although it is worth mentioning that we had a new manager come in few weeks ago so obviously she engineered my so-called suspension. Very disappointed in the management there, most of them use dictator-like style to manage while a very few of them are relatively easy going.
This may be just a place for disgruntled Tesco employees to vent their anger and it may be the case that they are not representative of whole of Tesco's work force, but,it does seem that Tesco has a problem with how they manage their workforce.
Management is a skill that is hard to learn, it is even harder to practice properly, if mangers are reading these posts and then if you recognize yourself in any of them then you are not a good manager.
I strongly urge any manager that finds themselves having to shout at (definitely a no no) or constantly having to discipline members of his or hers workforce to look closely at you are doing wrong you should be motivating them building a team that like each other and if possible are friends if you can achieve that then you will find they will work better and for each other and most importantly for you.

Feel sorry for all the staff. 2 years ago i was very unhappy. I had no christmas and no life. And no consideration was ever shown to me. I was working a 10 - 8 christmas eve. And told it was my problem of how i got home.

Was a lot of bollox. I quit due to ill health. Thank god i got ill. If it wasnt my back it would have been my mental health with how i was overworked and treated.

I work for a Tesco extra in Essex . a very small proportion of the managers are generally quite down to earth ,honest and fair BUT most of them really have no People skills. All they care about is dragging you down to get them higher.One of my managers was the biggest cunt ive ever meet. calling me up to do overtime on my day off, swearing at me for not finishing my job even tho i was doing a 12 hour job in 7 , curling hes finger at me to get me to come speak to him like a fucking child. disciplinary chats(bollocking) in front of loads of other colleagues
I work one day a week at Tescos and thank God I don't work there full time because I would blow a gasket...I was off sick with Norovirus and had a disciplinary on my return. I was like "are you serious? I had NOROVIRUS ffs. I was CONTAGIOUS!!!!" I tell you if I get it again I will come in and will shit and vomit all over the store.Also, the toilets regularly have no soap in them; so I tell the manager it's a breach of Health & Safety regulations and tell them I am taking a bottle of fucking Carex off the shelf to put in the toilets!

I used to drive vans for the home delivery service. You'd often get a reasonable no of deliveries during your shift, i.e. 50% over four or five hours, then the other 50% over two. When, inevitably, your deliveries took you over time, you didn't get paid. If you abandoned the deliveries when your contract time was up, you got warnings, leading to sacking. They never hand out gate keys to van staff, so you would often be waiting upto half an hour for someone to open the back gate so you could unload/reload or unload and go home. If by some miracle you finished early, you were expected to stock shelves or unpack crates, or you didn't get paid to contract hours that day, despite having to work for free if you ran over time most other days.
When id had enough, one night, after having to run an hour over time due to excessive no of later deliveries, and not being able to get back into thw yard to unload, due to having no gate key and joone answering call to open gate (waiting for 20min...last straw). I left the van parked over the gates and posted their keys back via royal mail (they had no spares for the vans !?!). Btw, this was also after being called in for "back to work interview" for being off ill under doctors orders, thus starting deliveries 40min late due to the "interview".

I placed an order with Tesco and I had to wait a month for it but on the day I was £4 over, so rather than take off 1 or 2 items they cancelled the whole order, I can't get another delivery slot and now I'm forced to have to go outside after being on self isolation for 10 days putting myself and others at risk. This is very thoughtless of Tesco, I thought we were in this together, apparently not.
