'Concerned' Parent: My 17 year old son is daft enough to risk dying for our country in false wars so kindly let him smoke Tesco' s filthy cigarettes!

While in Tesco Wrexham yesterday with my 17 year old son we both went to the cigarette kiosk to purchase cigarettes. My son is does look young for his age although he is seventeen and expected to be asked to produce I.D.

As he is a serving member of the British Army he carries an official Army I.D card with him at all times which includes a photograph. At the kiosk he produced this I.D but was told it was not acceptable as a form of I.D and was not served.

He was asked if he could produce a drivers license or passport as these were acceptable. These are left with the army back at his barracks in Aldershot. I am disgusted that this I.D was not accepted as if it is good enough for the military and every other place he has been asked to prove his age why do Tesco decide it is not valid I.D to them.

The I.D is only granted to members of the British Army and is therefore not a usual means of I.D but it is recognised by any other place including the Police. I am disgusted that at 17 he is old enough to defend his country but because he only looks young your store takes it upon themselves to reject military I.D.

I hope you look into this and inform your staff that a military I.D card should be accepted for identification, I know it is not a usual form of I.D but they are only issued to soldiers!!!!!!

From a Very Disgusted Parent.

  4. What about moaning about selling alcohol to a 17 year old one week then moan about not selling cigarettes to a 17 year old the next.

  5. HELLO! - 2 different complaints from 2 different people! so the law allows 17 yr olds to smoke and have sex but not to drink. i think you would be better to write to your mp if ur not happy although smoking and drinking are quite different as anyone will tell you. if it helps, one involves lungs and the other involves the tummy. now dont go eating a ciggy and smoking a beer when you turn 17!

  10. Tesco-Complaint say whatever they want about Tesco, true or false and allow anyone to post up an alledged complaint.

However, when anyone disagrees with them, they delete the post and lie about the reason for doing so.

So basically, you can say whatever you want on this website, as long as you agree with Tesco-Complaint.

  12. This is not about whether the lad should be smoking or not, its about tesco YET AGAIN getting arrogant, and using their pathetic little bit of power to deny him his smokes.

  13. This is not about Tescos either! It's not a standard form of id, any retail establishment would have refused it.

What is it with the blame Tescos for everything people?

  14. There is recognised forms of ID, and this obviously wasn't one.

Really, there should be no complaints about this as it actually shows the store is taking the whole 'Think 21' policy seriously.

Would you rather they were stricted on age restrictions, or lenient?

  15. A military ID is not an acceptable form of ID under the Think 21 scheme. Any cashier or assistant in any store using this policy will refuse it if they are doing their job properly.

  16. Also, from what I understand...if that were a test purchase, and they didn't ask for ID...that would be a failed test purchase.

Since in my stores group, they were using testers that were actually old enough to buy alcohol, but if there weren't ID'd under the Think 21 scheme, it would be a failed test purchase.

  18. In no shop is a military I.D acceptable proof of I.d In the same way that a Portman card, credit card, Nus card or a National rail card arnt. Before you actually make your purchase, on all tills, you will find 2 lables. These state the types of acceptable payment and also acceptable proof of I.D These being a photo Driving card and your passport. Blaming someone else for your ignornace just shows what todays people are really like and what shop workers have to put up with.

  19. An official Army ID card may well be ok for the army. Being as it's an official ARMY ID card, it would be kind of hypocritical for them not to accept it.
However, this type of ID has NOT been approved by trading standards. If it had been a test purchase and the cashier had accepted it, he/she could have received an on-the-spot fine AND a criminal record from trading standards.

  20. This link might help
    http://www.pass-scheme.org.uk/
ID cards must be approved by 'PASS', and have the 'PASS' logo on it, before t can be accepted as proof of age.
The only exceptions are passprts and driving licences.

On another note which isn't mentioned in this post. Did you know that it is also illegal to sell alcohol to anyone in an official uniform. This includes members of the emergency services, military personnel and, believe it or not, POSTMEN. the cashier can receive the same punishment as if they sold it to someone underage. The reason? The royal crest on the uniform.

  21. As someone who has served Queen & Country and is now employed by Tesco I too find it odd that members of the forces who have been vetted to the highest standards by the MOD (unlike Tesco staff who aren't vetted at all), can not use their MOD 90, RAF 1250 and Naval equivilant ID cards to prove their identity & age. Shame on you Tesco!

  22. There seem to be alot of jobsworth retail employee's/managers posting here in defense of the decision in this case. Get a life!!

The point here is not whether a military ID is an approved form of ID - the point is that it SHOULD be!
It displays a photo of the holder, their date of birth and has fraud protection in the form of a govenment hologram and anti-copy devices.

I wouldn't blame the cashier for the decision, but it's utterly ridiculous that an Mod ID card isn't good enough as prrof of age!

This country needs to start respecting it's armed forces!

The point I would make is whether 80MPH is an approved speed on British motorways. I think it should be....but it ain't. End of...
Tesco staff don't make the rules, we just take the crap from you for enforcing them
